Disability Access and Inclusion Plan

The City of Canning's Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2023-2028 (PDF 5MB) demonstrates the City’s commitment to improving access and inclusion for people with disabilities over the next five years.

The strategies and actions that feature in the DAIP 2023-28 (PDF 5MB) and associated Implementation Plan (PDF 1MB) are designed to ensure everyone feels welcome, able to contribute towards decision-making, have choice and control, are able to share public spaces and enjoy events, whilst feeling a sense of belonging.

The City of Canning undertook community engagement between November 2021 and Feb 2022 as part of the review of the plan. This feedback was vital for forming the strategies for improving access and inclusion for people with disabilities over the next five years. The City thanks the individuals and community groups who participated in the engagement process.

The strategies and actions in the DAIP 2023-28 and associated Implementation Plan are designed to ensure everyone:

• feels welcome
• can contribute towards decision-making
• has choice and control
• can share public spaces and enjoy events
• feels a sense of belonging.

Background

The Disability Services Act 1993 requires all local governments to develop a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP). DAIPs assist public authorities to plan and implement improvements to access and inclusion across the following seven outcome areas:

• services and events
• buildings and facilities
• information
• quality of service
• complaints
• consultation processes
• employment

Whilst DAIPs have a strong focus on addressing barriers faced by people with disability, the strategies that address these can promote better access and inclusion for older persons, parents, youth and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
