Kent Street Weir play space receives funding boost thanks to Lotterywest
The City of Canning is thrilled to announce a significant milestone in the development of the Kent Street Weir Precinct, with the project receiving a significant boost through funding support from Lotterywest.
Lotterywest is supporting the City with a grant of $1.4 million, which will go towards the development of the Kent Street Weir district level play space.
Once completed, the play space will provide a range of engaging play experiences and welcoming areas for families to enjoy. It will be inclusive and accessible, designed for all ages and abilities.
The space will also be enhanced with art that shares stories that were identified in collaboration with Noongar Elders.
The play space will mark the fifth stage of development for the Kent Street Weir Precinct, which began with community consultation and planning back in 2013. Following further community consultation and updates, the masterplan for the reserve was endorsed by Council in 2015.
Mayor Patrick Hall thanked Lotterywest for their support in helping deliver this stage of the Kent Street Weir Precinct masterplan.
“Located on the banks of the Canning River, Kent Street Weir is one of Canning’s most cherished reserves.
“We’re excited to begin this important stage of this project, which will ensure the reserve continues to be a favourite destination for local families for generations to come.
“Community feedback has played a vital role in shaping this vision, and with the generous funding support from Lotterywest, we’re thrilled to create a space that everyone can enjoy,” Mayor Hall said.
Lotterywest CEO Colin Smith said Lotterywest is proud to support the Kent Street Weir play space, which will provide a fun space for kids of all ages to enjoy.
“It’s fantastic to be able to support this project, which is going to benefit many families, not only locals in the City of Canning, but visitors from around Perth and across Western Australia.”
The City’s Annual Playground Renewal program will see an additional six playgrounds renewed in early 2026. This is as part of the City’s commitment to invest $25 million into parks and playgrounds across the City, which was adopted in the Better Budget 2025/2026.
Construction of Canning’s third district level play space at Kent Street Weir is expected to commence in January 2026, with this exciting new space expected to be open by mid 2026.
