The Verge Incentive Scheme encourages City of Canning residents to transform their street verges into attractive, waterwise gardens.
By replacing lawn or non-compliant treatments with locally native, low-water-use plants, the scheme helps create cooler, greener streets while supporting local wildlife and reducing water use.
When your application is approved, and after you have established and maintained your verge garden for a minimum of four months, you are eligible for a financial rebate.
Funding is limited. Apply early to avoid missing out.
Requirements
The scheme is open to:
- Property owners in the City of Canning
- Tenants and occupiers (with written consent from the property owner or authorised strata representative)
All verge gardens must comply with the Streetscape Management – Verge Landscape Treatments Policy (ET529). The key requirements of the policy are:
- no synthetic turf or gravel
- paving is limited to 33% of the verge area, including crossover and footpath (if present)
- paving requires written approval (include a sketch with your application and the City will advise if changes are needed)
- if there is no public footpath, a 1.5 metre wide strip parallel to the kerb without plantings must be left to allow pedestrians to walk along the verge (see example). Bark mulch is an acceptable treatment in these instances.
Street Tree Requirement
If your verge doesn’t have a street tree, you’ll need to leave space for one to be planted. Please refer to the Tree Policy (ET525) for more information.
If you'd like to be a part of the 2026 street tree planting program, please request a tree.
If you already have a street tree, please avoid disturbing the roots during planting and do not place mulch against the trunk.
How to Apply
To apply for the scheme:
- Take ‘before’ photos of your verge.
- Sketch a simple plan of your proposed garden.
- Complete the application form.
- Make any adjustments requested by the City and re-submit your plan.
- Receive written approval, which includes a rebate application form.

If you're renting, the property owner must sign the application.
