To be employed as a Swimming Teacher at the Canning Swim School, you will need:
- a current swimming teacher qualification (AUSTSWIM, Royal Life or Swim Australia)
- a valid Working With Children Check
- updated Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
We offer varying shift times for Swim School Instructors. This will allow you to balance work with school, university, another job, or family life. You can work as little as 2 hours per week or as many as 20-30 hours per week – it is up to you.
Supervised Industry Training Prac Hours
If you are new to swimming teaching and you need to complete your supervised industry training prac hours, we can help you. We accept prac teachers each term to help them develop their skills and guide their learning as part of their Austswim qualification.

This area encompasses the gym, group fitness classes and sports courts.
Activity Instructors
We currently run a range of children’s activities, including:
- dance
- kindy gym
- kindy sports
- coaching sessions in badminton, basketball, gymnastics, and soccer.
We look for instructors who are good with children and have experience in the activity being taught.
It would be helpful to have completed the Community Coaching General Principles course or have accreditation through a sporting association.
All staff working with children must hold a current Working with Children Check.
Group Fitness Instructors
There are a range of classes offered including freestyle, aqua fitness, and Les Mills classes.
Instructors must hold:
- a group fitness qualification
- a current first aid qualification, preferably registered with Fitness Australia.
Some classes (such as Les Mills) require instructors to have completed training in that style and the latest released format.
Gym Instructors
Gym Instructors must hold a Certificate III in Fitness and have a current first aid qualification.

Personal Trainers
Personal Trainers must hold a Certificate IV in Personal Training and have a current first aid qualification.
We prefer trainers who are registered with Fitness Australia and have experience in conducting personal training sessions.
Sports Umpires
We look for people who have a thorough knowledge of the game’s rules and who can handle difficult players and situations. A certification from a sporting association would be an advantage.
The Customer Experience team includes our front counter staff and other roles.
Customer Service Assistants
We look for engaging staff who are available to work varying shifts, including early starts, evenings, and weekends. As well as dealing with customers face-to-face and over the phone, you will gain skills such as:
- point of sale
- cash and EPTPOS reconciliation
- facility bookings
- retail stock control
- direct debit transactions
- banking procedures.
There are no formal qualifications necessary, however you will need to show professionalism, patience, and have a people-first attitude.
Crèche Assistants
You will need to love children, have experience working in a crèche or childcare centre, and hold a current Working with Children Check.
These casual positions are offered mostly weekday mornings from 9am. The role includes craft and other activities, nappy changing, and cleaning.
Other Positions
There are others who work behind the scenes and these include officers working in finance and facility bookings. There are also supervisory positions for those with experience in leisure and management.
Pool Lifeguards are key to aquatic operations at the Cannington and Riverton Leisureplexes. Lifeguards oversee the safe use of pools and respond to emergency and first aid situations.
Lifeguarding can be the beginning of a rewarding career in the aquatics and recreation industry. To start your lifeguard career, Royal Life Saving Society WA holds courses all year round and there are two pathways to become qualified:
- 4 Day Pool Lifeguard Course (no previous training required)
- 2 Day Pool Lifeguard Course (must hold a current Provide First Aid certification)
If you are a qualified lifeguard wishing to undertake practical hours, please email employment@canning.wa.gov.au. We will provide you with a request form and instructions to request a work experience placement.
Experienced lifeguards can gain a Swimming Pool Operator’s certification. This can lead to gaining experience in plant operations, project, staff, and facility management roles.
