Local garden lover wins Grow it Local award
05 March 2025

Last month Canning resident, Sadhana Bose was awarded the Grow it Local, Local Grower Award for the City of Canning, recognising her amazing work to create an inspirational home food garden.

The national Grow it Local awards acknowledge the passion and creativity of the home food growing community, whether it’s growing in the backyard, balcony, community garden, school garden or even a windowsill.

Earlier this year, Sadhana entered the Local Grower Award category, which celebrates local growers transforming and nurturing their own space at home, inspiring students and parents at a school food garden, or making good things happen as a part of a community garden.

“Since beginning my home food growing journey, I have developed skills I never thought were possible including preparing home-made turmeric powder from annual harvests, marinating home grown kalamata olives, pickling lemons and even making plant ties out of banana plant sheaths.

“Watching green waste turn into mulch with the help from my worm friends brings me so much joy and the City of Canning’s Waste management and Sustainability teams have been a great help.

“My garden produces not only enough food for my family and friends for the season, but also ample to freeze to last until the next season of produce comes through.

“A garden is a place where you can make the small changes, which will have a big impact overall,” said Sadhana.

Mayor Patrick Hall said it’s great to see local Canning resident, Sadhana recognised by Grow it Local for the amazing work she is doing to create a sustainable and productive garden, to help reduce her environmental footprint.

“With the cost of everyday food items increasing, residents like Sadhana can inspire us all to connect to nature, encourage positive health and wellbeing, and commence our own sustainable living journey.

“The next Grow it Local Autumn seed service commences in March. I would like to encourage Canning residents to take advantage of this and start their own home food garden,” said Mayor Hall.

From 3 March, Grow it Local in partnership with the City of Canning, will be offering the free Autumn Seed Service to new Grow it Local members. To register to www.growitlocal.com/free-seed-service, this offer is limited to the 100 registrations.

The City also offers rebates on home composting and worm farming equipment for more information go to www.canning.wa.gov.au/ecorebates.
